LaPorte County Jail Capacity
The official jail history page lists the current jail capacity as 368 and an average daily population of 306. It also gives local history that helps explain why the jail, sheriff, and courthouse records are centered in downtown La Porte. The Sheriff's Office was established in 1832 under first sheriff Benjamin McCarty, and the county's first jail was contracted in 1833 as a log building on the courthouse plaza.
Later jail buildings included a plank jail in 1841 or 1842, an 1857 brick jail on State Street, a fourth jail in 1907, the 1977 La Porte County Annex and Security Complex with a 135-bed jail, and a five-story addition begun in 2002 that expanded capacity from 135 beds to 350 beds. The current published capacity is 368.

LaPorte County Inmate Visitation
La Porte County Jail uses Securus Technologies for on-site and at-home video visitation. Inmates receive one free on-site visit per week. Regular visits last 20 minutes and must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance. Visitors can schedule through Securus or at one of eight on-site kiosks at the Sheriff's Office. LaPorte County Inmate Mail and Funds
La Porte County Jail implemented Digital Mail Center service on March 4, 2024. Mail that cannot be scanned is returned, and unacceptable mail can be placed in inmate property or returned to sender. The jail lists many rejected items, including newspaper or magazine clippings, post-it notes, taped or adhesive items, staples, paper clips, bound items, glitter, pop-out cards, packages, certified mail, cash, coins, personal checks, payroll checks, business checks, SSD or SSI checks, photos smaller than 4 by 6, and anything larger than 8.5 by 14.

Commissary deposits can be made at the kiosk in the Sheriff's Office lobby with cash or credit/debit cards. Online deposits can be made through Tigg's Canteen or eXpressAccount. The jail does not accept cash at the counter. A cashier's check or money order may be mailed directly to the inmate using the jail address. Payroll checks, personal checks, and Social Security checks are not accepted. Web commissary orders must be placed by 12:00 AM every Tuesday to ensure delivery for the following week.
LaPorte County Bond and Notifications
Bond and inmate status questions often follow a roster search. The sheriff FAQ says bond or bail money is accepted 8 AM-4 PM at the Clerk of the Circuit Court and 24/7 at the Sheriff's Office lobby. If unanswered or urgent, medications may be dropped off any time to the Front Desk or Main Control, but narcotics and pain medicine are never accepted.
